What Not to Flush: Protecting Your Septic System

What not to flush with septic system

Your septic system is a living ecosystem. Billions of bacteria work around the clock to break down waste and keep your system functioning. But certain items can kill these bacteria, clog your pipes, and damage your drain field. Here's what should never go down your drains.

Items to Never Flush or Pour Down the Drain

1. Cooking Grease and Oil

Grease solidifies as it cools, clogging pipes and filling your septic tank with non-biodegradable material. Pour grease into a container and throw it in the trash.

2. Harsh Chemical Cleaners

Bleach, drain cleaners, and antibacterial products kill the beneficial bacteria your septic system needs. Use mild, biodegradable cleaners instead.

3. "Flushable" Wipes

Despite what the label says, flushable wipes do not break down in septic systems. They clog pipes, fill tanks, and damage pumps. Always throw wipes in the trash.

4. Feminine Hygiene Products

Tampons, pads, and liners do not break down and will quickly fill your septic tank. Dispose of them in the trash.

5. Diapers

Even "biodegradable" diapers don't break down quickly enough for septic systems. Always trash them.

6. Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds don't break down in septic tanks and accumulate as sludge. Compost them or throw them in the trash.

7. Cat Litter

Cat litter is designed to clump and will clog your septic system. Never flush it.

8. Medications

Flushing medications introduces chemicals into your septic system and can contaminate groundwater. Use drug take-back programs instead.

9. Paint and Solvents

These chemicals can kill beneficial bacteria and contaminate groundwater. Dispose of them at a hazardous waste facility.

10. Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butts don't break down and contain toxic chemicals. Always dispose of them in the trash.

What Is Safe to Flush?

The only things that should go down your drains are: human waste, toilet paper (septic-safe), and water. That's it. Stick to these three and your septic system will thank you.
